How did we get our name?

How did we get our name?

Why We’re Called Brumby in the Moonlight

Every name carries a story, and Brumby in the Moonlight was born from a moment I will carry with me forever.

Let’s go back to 2022. Jesse and I were on what felt like one of our biggest adventures yet, tackling the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley, Western Australia. Full of excitement and optimism, we set off… only to break down on our very first night. We were camping near Tunnel Creek in the King Leopold Ranges, and the heat was relentless. It wasn’t the start we’d imagined.

The next morning, after calling RACV, we were told a flatbed truck would be sent to collect our car and we’d be given another vehicle to drive to the nearest town, Fitzroy Crossing, where we’d wait while the car was repaired. After spending most of the day waiting, RACV finally arrived, loaded up our car, and handed us the keys to a Troopy, something Jesse was pretty excited about. With a 4–5 hour drive ahead of us, we settled in for the long journey.

About three hours into the drive, night began to fall. A full moon rose and illuminated the vast Kimberley landscape, casting a soft glow over everything around us. I was sitting in the back seat, head turned toward the window, as Jesse and his dad chatted away in the front seats, watching the rugged terrain roll past while the Troopy rattled along the road.

Then, in the distance, I saw it.

A bright white brumby, galloping alone across the rocky fields, illuminated by the moonlight. It was fleeting, quiet, and impossibly beautiful. In that moment, time seemed to slow. I didn’t reach for a camera or try to capture it,  I simply watched, completely present, taking it all in.

That moment lives only in my memory, and I’ve come to cherish that. There’s a certain peace in knowing it wasn’t documented or shared, but experienced fully and deeply. It’s a reminder of how powerful it is to be present, especially in a world that so often urges us to record rather than feel.

And so, Brumby in the Moonlight was born.

The name is a nod to that moment, but it also represents something much bigger. This brand would not exist without the self-exploration, growth, and transformation that came from life on the road. It’s a reminder to keep exploring, to embrace the unknown, and to follow wherever your heart leads you.

This is the beginning of the Brumby journey and I’m so grateful to have you here for it.
